Relational Database Service (RDS) is one of the fastest growing AWS businesses, providing and managing relational databases as a service. RDS is seeking talented database engineers who will innovate and engineer solutions in the area of database technology.

The Database Engineering team is actively engaged in the ongoing database engineering process, partnering with development groups and providing deep subject matter expertise to feature design. We are an advocate for the customer, bringing forward and resolving issues. In this role you act as the “Voice of the Customer” helping software engineers understand how customers use databases to help build the next generation of Aurora & RDS services -- this NOT a DBA role.

AWS Utility Computing (UC) provides product innovations — from foundational services such as Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), to consistently released new product innovations that continue to set AWS’s services and features apart in the industry. As a member of the UC organization, you’ll support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (Iot), Platform, and Productivity Apps services in AWS, including support for customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services

Key job responsibilities
Deep dive into ambiguous customer issues to understand the root cause. We answer complex questions about why the database engine is not working as desired. We then use that knowledge to improve the database engine as we work on new feature development.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Deep knowledge and experience designing and running MySQL relational databases including knowledge of database internals (locking, consistency, serialization, recovery paths)
- Systems engineering experience, including Linux performance, memory management, I/O tuning, configuration, security, networking, clusters and troubleshooting.
- Experience working directly with customers, resolving database, systems and infrastructure-related issues and also providing systems architecture leadership
- Experience engineering, administering and managing multiple relational database flavors (e.g. Oracle, MySQL, SQLServer, PostgreSQL)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (EC2, EBS, S3, etc.)
- Experience building and maintaining complex mission-critical production database systems
- Experience analyzing issues holistically, from the application tier through the database, down to the infrastructure
- Working knowledge of a scripting language (shell, Python, Perl)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $131,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $227,000/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
